Penalty after Penalty

By pulgaa

This week was an English week in the Swiss Super League. Saturday 12th April FCSG played against YB. We won 2:0. But that we can’t win against both leaders of the Super League we prove against Basel. We lost 1:4. But that result doesn’t come up with the fight on the pitch. SG kept up with Basel. As always the games between Basel and St.Gallen are an extreme spectacle. This time I think the referee was the deciding factor. He had a lot of wrong or at least dubious decisions. But let’s start by the beginning:

The first goal was shot by Basel. The goal getter was the agile Portuguese Carlitos in the 10th Minute. Then there was a foul penalty for SG. Francisco Aguirre had been fouled by François Marque (32.). He wanted to shoot the penalty by himself – he struck. Aguirre didn’t score the penalties anymore the last time, but then the coach threw out Jürgen Gjasula and they had to choose a new one for this task.

A harmless touch of Marcos Gelabert to Eduardo gave a second penalty, this time for Basel. Referee Carlo Bertolini gave the penalty although it shouldn’t have been one – And these aren’t just the words of a true SG-supporter, every newspaper was the same opinion. Citation Sportaktuell: If that was a penalty, then there would be ten penalties in every football game. The problem is that we in Switzerland don’t really have many smart referees. There are so many mistakes by refs! Swedish centre back Majstorovic scored. A little time later Carlitos launched Eren Derdiyok, Swiss national player, with the heel which served the ball to David Degen. He scored the goal.

After half time SG tried to come closer with a goal, but they didn’t achieve one. Basel, however, struck one last goal in the 82th minute by Marko Perovic with a long distance kick.

That was the explosive home match. It was the third last game in our old stadium Espenmoos. There are just two games left. I think I have to watch the last two games live and I have to take some pictures. But of course more important is that we don’t have to play in the Challenge League as soon as the new stadium reaches us.

Preview: Today, 19th April 2008, 17:45 FC Luzern – FC St.Gallen

It is always a good way of “measuring” one team facing the top ranked team in your league.
I remember Carlitos.. but for a stupid reason: My brother set the commentator in the computer game to say the name “Carlitos” whenever Carlos Tevez play the ball.. But that was when Tevez was not recognized as an international star. :P

It is a topic by itself about “who has to take the penalties?”. In Boca there is Riquelme. But if he is absent, then there it goes Palermo. But you know Palermo’s past.. he missed 3 penatlies in a same match. And he is very ugly shooting penalties!! Even in Boca! He missed several even this season. So why does he keep shooting them?? It is a mistery… He is the “goleador” the one that achieved 180 goals in Boca. So he has all people support. But he keeps failing them…

“If that was a penalty, then there would be ten penalties in every football game” : Excellent. It is really difficult to decide whether was it a fault or not. Just being inside the box determines the referee decision. The TV should show the place where the referee is to decide if he was far or close to the play. Cameras shoot the action very close. But what might seem penalty in the cameras, might not seem on the field at a distance. Should the sport Football include TV rules as other sports do? A team would be capable of asking one TV replay in a match so the referee could evaluate it and judge later based on what he sees on TV screen. Bad thing is the interruption… a fact that football is not welcome. Football is constant action. But injuries take a lot of time off the game…

Well, I see final matches for FCSG: Saturday vs FC Sion, Wed vs Zurich and next Sat vs Aarau. FSCG has the chance to climb up another place in the chart if Xamax team drops points in the way. And even overpassing Sion if we are too optimistic!
We will see how it will end. At least a recovering from the last place can be taken as a first achievement!

Perhaps the people in Boca don’t want to see that Palermo isn’t the right person for penalties. Or they know what the public don’t know: that he is the right person.

I would be pleased if we had a camera rule. The referees should know about the truth before making a decision. But on the other hand it would become boring because you couldn’t discuss about a wrong action. I’m still sure, Italy wouldn’t be the actual world champion, if the referee hadn’t whistled the penalty in the 93th minute against Australia.

Well. Where would the passion go if every decision would be right? we couldn’t even scream “ref you asshole!” because he makes everything right. It would be a revolution, but I’m not sure if it would be correct.

I go to see the game against Sion live. But strangely I’m afraid of the match. No, not of the match. It must be another thing..
The fact is: if we are on 9th place at the end of the season, we will dive down in the relegation. Those teams of the second league are passionate, emotional, want to give everything for the team and they have something that FCSG wouldn’t have: believe!

Well, we just can wait and see. Would you like a cup of tea while waiting? =P

It is difficult to think why Palermo is still being chosen to kick penalties if Riquelme isnt available… Palermo has infinite stories to tell. Every single goal (or even not goals!) that he scored has an history behind. For example: Did you know that Palermo took a penalty and slid in his run to the ball?? Then he ended kicking the ball with BOTH FEET!! The ball slightly changed direction and fooled the keeper! Referee didnt notice that and allowed the goal!
Palermo continue kicking penalties because of that “goalmaker”mystic. But the true fact is that he sucks!

What you say about the camera is what FIFA say. And it is true. Game would be not the same without human mistakes. Plus I think they want to make us believe football will always be a “poor people” sport. This is a huge topic to be discussed. It sounds rough as I say it. But what I mean is football is meant to be played simply. Anyone can go out and kick a ball or whatever thing with a ball shape and play football.
You can see successful players earning a lot of money. But now think about their past… they almost all had poverty past. Look Carlos Tevez living in a gangster village. Diego Maradona the same. So they want to keep football as simple as possible. And they rather not add technology gadgets to it.
See rugby for example. All players are elite players. They come from rich families. Perhaps I’m writing about this subject too superficially.

Now I see FCSG has one last match remaining. I think its fate has been decided.. hasnt it?

I didn’t know that Palermo once slid when he wanted to shoot the penalty. I just remember Beckham doing it =P. But Palermo still scored. Wow! What a goal, with both feet!

It’s fucking true that a big part of famous people – including footballers – were poor once or had difficult living conditions. That’s the reason they want to achieve something and learn to keep pushing forward. The best person is that one that is always remembering his/her past and never forget it while getting more popular.

Sometimes I think you must come from the future. You say on 3th May the fate has decided and you say there is one match remaining. But to that time there were 2 matches remaining. Well. Now there is just one and we have to play in the relegation. You were right.
